Halloween and Guy Fawkes night are over. Customary, the shops would be ready with Christmas Carols, their halls decked out, and everyone primed to help each and every customer to buy.
Thanksgiving is almost upon our American Friends, this will actively start the ball rolling, followed by Black Friday and now Cyber Monday - will kick start a hike in our sales. It's not only the fact that there may be huge savings to be made, but there is also a cleverly designed twist that marketeers are well aware of, to help us spend and make out it was our idea.
Ladies, we all know or should do by the time we have reached our 20's how we have an idea and make it someones else's. How many times have you decided a job, a purchase, a day out will happen and twist it to allow him to think it was 'his idea' - is exactly how great marketing works.
We all know that shop windows are a great drawer, and having dressed a few toy shop windows, I can honestly say a lot of thought goes into how that window reflects the shop owner and the way they portray their business. It isn't by simply adding products to a window showcase. A Christmas window display will have been planned months in advance with the large stores reflecting any marketing, including brands used in Magazines and TV Christmas advertising. Can you imagine running a Christmas advert and not having that item on display or worse in stock!
Is it the Christmas decorations, carols or fun Christmas events, open evenings, Christmas wrapping, the clothes the staff wear? A Christmas grotto with visiting Santa to attract families - the lights - yes, this is all built-in, but there's more.
There's joined-up marketing that comes to play that you won't even recognise, its the speed people talk, the music on the radio, the good feel factor when there's a lead up to a big event. It even comes down to website banners, call to action buttons, the messages of urgency and the colours used. Once you understand how it all works, you can literally turn it on - or off.
Whether you are an independent or a massive retail store, In lock-down, and rely on passing trade, sales are not going to hit those targets if you do nothing. You have to make sure anyone wanting to buy, is going to spend their money with you. Ensuring your business, products, and services stand out. Your buyers are looking for you - show them where and how they can buy.

Black Friday
Black Friday is an informal name for the Friday following Thanksgiving Day in the United States, which is celebrated on the fourth Thursday of November. The day after Thanksgiving has been regarded as the beginning of the United States Christmas shopping season since 1952. The term "Black Friday" did not become widely used until more recent decades, during which time global retailers have adopted the term and date to market their own holiday sales. Taken from Wikipedia
For many, Black Friday was a term used because it was at that point the books turned - from red to black in the year.
I know from my retail, wholesale, International Distributor days that 80% of my sales, were completed in the last quarter of the year.
I wish every retailer the very best for Q4 2020.
