How 'unexpectedly' our businesses become vulnerable

Gilly • March 22, 2019

How vulnerable are we when running a small business?

I thought I was on a roll, I had spoken on ‘There's diamonds in tweaking your website and online presence’, at Coffee and Natter in Bromsgrove networking, with Ralph Watson. I was invited to speak at Peter Thompson’s 100+ Club, on ‘10 Mistakes when building your own website’, both leading to new connections, follow-ups, and work. I've been invited to take part in Haley Lynn Gray’s radio show and I was looking forward to exhibiting at Basingstoke Business Expo on the 28th at Oakley Hall. Stand 24 - (come and say hello)

I have even been out networking this week, noticeably not using my writing hand.

Little did I know that whilst ice skating with my grandchildren I would be sideswiped by one of those balancing penguins that knocked the feet from under me and I've ended up in our local Hospital's A&E department with a fractured wrist, now in plaster and a sling.

Consequences: No typing, no writing, no driving or lifting and basically slowing me down and putting a greater onus, very much on my partner.

It has made me realise how vulnerable we all are in small businesses. We have a duty of care to take care of ourselves both mentally and physically, and whilst I am very aware of the risk, I don’t ski and haven't taken up high-performance sports, I never thought for one moment that I would be so much at risk on an ice rink. I can skate.

We can't live our lives wrapped in cotton wool, I've been in business for 30 years and I certainly haven't reached a point where I stay indoors and not learn new skills, however it has brought home to me, there are hidden risks and how a simple thing like a fractured wrist can seriously slow the amount of work I can get through in a day.

Solution: an increase in zoom calls and actively use Google Docs transcription tools - and sorry boys, Nana will be a few weeks before she can take you skating again.

Is this a situation you recognise?
