Goal Setting for Quarter 2, 2020 Why would we, why should we?

Gill Fountain • Apr 15, 2020

Are you still setting goals for 2020?

Background image
At the end of December 2019, the beginning of January 2020 social media posts was positively streaming with information about goal setting. Goal setting in the business world appeared to replace the more traditional New Years Resolutions.

There were challenges, tick boxes, targets with some business owners setting their own goals and others taking part as a group encouraging each other to complete 'the list'.

Has this changed for quarter 2?
With all that has happened since March 2020, I wondered if.
a. We achieved the goals set.

b. Have we set goals for quarter 2?

Why would we want to take on another challenge when we have so much more happening in our lives, so many changes to take on board with most of our 'normality' appears to have vanished.

Why would we, why should we?
  1. It helps to keep us focused
  2. It helps to feel we are in control
  3. It may keep us in front of our more loyal clients - and also those who will start looking around for new suppliers.
  4. It may be THE thing that keeps our businesses in business as we begin to come out on the other side.
  5. It will help our well-being and mindset whilst keeping busy with new ideas to help our businesses.
  6. We will learn more to be in a better place - looking towards a better future
  7. It could very well give us optimism that for a short period of time went missing
  8. We may be seen in a different light by our staff and colleagues
  9. Our families will be proud we didn't give up
  10. It will help our employees
At this moment in time, it's important to review our goals. They will have changed and not what we had visualised at the start of the year, however, our new goals could give hope that keeps us, our families and our employees motivated and willing to push forward - They might even keep us in business.
This is what I have heard in the last few weeks - could any of these be said of you?
  • Our boss doesn't appear to have any direction
  • As soon as it looked like we were going into lock-down, we were told we were no longer required
  • I have no idea what is happening
  • I don't know if I have a job to go back to
  • Our management said don't worry, we are in this together
  • I had an interview by phone and was immediately offered a job when we come out of lock-down
  • Our boss told us if we get really short of money they will give us an advance that we can work off on overtime when we are allowed to work.
  • We've been told as soon as they are allowed our company will be back and open to all of us
  • We don't know if the company will survive but the owners are working their best to prepare for the future.
  • We get some feedback each week - even if it's we've got to wait it out - at least its something.
